BACKGROUND-Committee for Rural and Urban Development (CRUD) is, nonpolitical, nonprofitable, nongovernmental (NGO) philanthropic Organization. Established in November 2000.with the initiative of present Executive Director (founder of the organization) and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. CRUD runs major parts of the developmental activities in Habiganj region in Bangladesh, which still belongs to relatively untouched areas, sufficient local development institutions did not emerge, government initiatives have been as else where rudimentary, high degree of conservatism and significant influence of fundamental have hindered the process of development in Habiganj region. Bangladesh is a small and poor country with a huge population of about 140 million. About 76% of the population lives in the rural areas and 46% live below poverty line. In rural areas where Health care services, either government or private, are insufficient due to geographical inaccessibility and financial limitation. Forty percent of child deaths take place in the neonatal period. Children born to unhealthy mothers are also more likely to be under weight and to have difficulty combating illness. The importance of nutrition as a foundation for healthy development, Poor nutrition leads to ill health and ill health causes further deterioration of nutritional status. These effects are observed most dramatically in infants and young children, Sixty per cent of all child deaths in 2000 were associated with malnutrition. But the children who die represent only a small part of the total disease burden due to nutritional deficiencies. Maternal malnutrition and inadequate breastfeeding and complementary feeding represent huge risks to the health of those children who survive. Vitamin A, iodine, iron, and zinc deficiencies are still widespread and are a common cause of excess morbidity and mortality, particularly among young children. In the region about half the under-five children are underweight; 15% are wasted; and, in low-income countries (like Bangladesh) one in every three children at age five is stunted. The effects of poor nutrition and stunting continue over the child's life, contributing to poor school performance, reduced productivity, and other measures of impaired intellectual and social development. Mortality- the infant mortality rate (IMR) 53 per 1,000 live births. Under-five mortality rate is 76 per 1,000 live births and the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) 550 per 100,000 live births. Infant and maternal mortality rate are too high. Child and adult education is low, high dropouts are normal phenomena, health facilities and health centers are in adequate, family planning services are poor, use of sanitary latrines are not common, access to safe drinking water is scare, credit for the poor is not accessible, natural calamities like flash flood, earthquake(highrisk) are frequent phenomena, the disaster management is not effective in terms of relief and rehabilitation, social terrorism region over laws, people are vulnerable to easy drug availability, local cottage industry is dying due to missing market linkage, people are not linked with modern or hybrid culture in agriculture, livestock and poultry, government’s infrastructure facilities in this area are undeveloped, social and local allied leaders do not actively participate in the development activities.
